2023-24 MINOR SINGLES
OH, WHAT A COMPETITIVE 2023-24 MINOR SINGLES!
Our 2023-24 Minor Singles commenced on Thursday 23rd November with a field of 13 ladies and what a Minor Singles it was!
The Round 1 games were very competitive with several only a shot or 2 the difference. Carmel Moore defeated Gail Stewart, Kay Griffiths defeated Dianne Blanch, Liz Windle defeated Dianne Bauerhuit and Judy Lawrenson received a forfeit from Lorraine Clark.
Round 2 was played on Friday 24th November and once again several close games. Judy Lawrenson 25 defeated Carmel Moore 11, Liz Windle 25 defeated Kay Griffiths 21, Lyn Bragg 25 defeated Helen Campbell 15 and in an absolute cliffhanger June Wilson 25 defeated Jenny Brown 24.
The Semi-Finals were played on 30th November where Judy Lawrenson 25 defeated Liz Windle 9 and Lyn Bragg 25 defeated June Wilson 24. In the game between Judy and Liz they both got off to a steady start with the scores even, until Judy consolidated and maintained her momentum to win 25-9. The game between Lyn and June went down to the wire, where June showed us all that age is no barrier in bowls at the age of 90! Lyn got off to a handy lead of 16-9 and June held her nerve to come back and take the lead 24-21, however Lyn steadied to pick up 3 shots to win 25-24.
The Final played on 1st December between Judy Lawrenson and Lyn Bragg was also another cliffhanger. Lyn got off to a brilliant start and held a handy lead of 12 nil before Judy won an end with 1 shot to get on the scoreboard and it was 12-1 to Lyn. Judy steadied the nerves and won the next 4 ends collecting 8 shots to reduce Lyn’s lead and it was 12-9 in Lyn’s favour.
They each collected a shot each over the next 2 ends and it was 13-10 to Lyn. Lyn won the next 4 ends to stretch her lead to 20-10 and was looking like the winner. However, Judy won the next 3 ends collecting 5 shots and the score was 20-15 to Lyn.
Lyn won the next end with 3 shots and had a handy lead of 23-15 and Judy had the job in front of her to halt Lyn’s momentum. Well, the ends that followed had the many spectators on hand sitting on the edge of their seats. Judy won the next 2 ends collecting 5 shots and the score was 23-20 in favour of Lyn with Lyn winning the next end and it was 24-20 to Lyn.
Judy won the next 2 ends collecting 4 shots and it was 24 all! What a final end, Judy came in with a beautiful draw shot and looked the likely winner, however Lyn came in with a great bowl to take shot and win the Final 25-24.
Congratulations to both Lyn and Judy on a tremendous game played in good sportsmanship.
